Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Tuesday that military talks will be held next Friday between Western leaders regarding the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine.
During his meeting with outgoing German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Kyiv, Zelensky said that a small group of countries had expressed their willingness to send military units to Ukraine.
He later explained in his evening address that Friday's meeting would also focus on establishing a new security framework for Ukraine.
He added, "We are preparing detailed proposals regarding the military units of our partners that could become part of the new security structure. In fact, this is one of Ukraine's security guarantees."
Last Friday, the Ukrainian president announced a meeting of the chiefs of staff of France, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine, but did not specify a date.
France and the United Kingdom have expressed their willingness to send forces as part of a so-called "coalition of the willing" to monitor any potential ceasefire, while Russia has strongly opposed any NATO deployment, warning of further escalation.
Since February 24, 2022, Russia has launched a military attack on its neighbor, Ukraine, and has made ending the offensive conditional on Kyiv abandoning its membership in Western military entities. Kyiv considers this "interference" in its affairs.
