Jakarta - Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said the 1-2 defeat in the German DFB Cup semifinals to third-tier team Arminia Bielefeld was very painful.
Playing at Bielefelder Alm, Wednesday WIB, Leverkusen took the lead through Jonathan Tah (17'). However, three minutes later the home team equalized through Marius Worl (20') and scored their second goal through Maximilian Grosser (45+3').
"The development so far has been good, but there have also been setbacks that are part of the development. That hurts," Alonso was quoted as saying on the club's official X account on Wednesday.
Die Werkself dominated the game with a total of 13 shots, four of which were on target. However, they were unable to score more than one goal after a fine display from Bielefeld goalkeeper Jonas Thomas Kersken who made three saves.
This was Bielefeld's fourth heroic DFB Cup appearance after Leverkusen became the fourth top-flight team they knocked out.
