US campaign against illegal immigration leads to 1,000 arrests in one week

The US Department of Justice announced that it had charged approximately 1,000 undocumented immigrants during the first week of April, as part of a security operation called "Restore America," which aims to curb illegal immigration.

The campaign included six border counties: Arizona, Central California, Southern California, New Mexico, South Texas, and West Texas. Charges ranged from illegal entry and re-entry after deportation to human and drug smuggling.

In the details of the operations, 204 people were arrested in Arizona County, including 83 accused of re-entry after deportation and 107 of illegal entry.

Fourteen people were also charged with human trafficking, including Mexican Ivan Mauricio Hernandez Mosqueda, who was sentenced to 46 months in prison for smuggling more than 100 illegal immigrants, providing them with false instructions to claim asylum.

In Southern California, 97 defendants were brought to justice on charges including human smuggling, bribery, and drug trafficking. Among the most notable cases was the arrest of Mexican Francisco Anguiano Rios attempting to smuggle 547 pounds of cocaine through the Otay Mesa border crossing.

In Central California, 24 deported re-entrants were charged, some with serious criminal records. In New Mexico, 99 people were arrested on immigration charges, including defendants with criminal records for child and drug offenses.

In South Texas, 225 defendants were brought to justice, most of whom had drug and violent convictions. Meanwhile, in West Texas, 259 cases were filed without providing further details. Among the defendants was Mexican national Miguel Angel Torres Segura, who was accused of participating in a human trafficking network that transported more than 900 illegal immigrants.

The Department of Justice commended the efforts of the district attorneys in these counties, stressing that the campaign aims to enhance border security and combat organized crime. Operation "Restore America" is part of a broader security strategy launched by the administration of former President Donald Trump to address the illegal immigration crisis and protect communities from violence and crime.
