US President Donald Trump described the United States as a "patient in recovery" on Thursday, following his announcement of new tariffs on several countries.
Trump said of the new tariffs: "The operation is complete! The patient lives and is on the road to recovery."
The prognosis is that the patient will be much stronger, bigger, better, and more resilient than ever before. Make America great again!"
In this regard, the White House spokeswoman said in response to a CNN question about the possibility of reevaluating tariffs imposed on countries around the world:
"The president is firm in his approach. If these countries wanted to negotiate and do the right thing, they would have had 70 years to do so."
Trump announced Wednesday evening that Washington would impose new tariffs on several countries around the world , most notably China, the European Union, and India.
Trump said the US economy had been "looted and destroyed" for decades by allies and enemies, but that imposing symmetrical tariffs would put an end to that.
The US president described the decision as a "declaration of economic independence," asserting that the United States would direct "trillions of dollars" in revenue from the corresponding tariffs to reduce taxes and pay down government debt, noting that all of this would happen "very quickly."
