In its statement, it said, "The Damascus Countryside Security Directorate seized a warehouse containing quantities of weapons and ammunition, including anti-tank missiles."
She explained that this occurred "during a security operation in the Qatana area in the Damascus countryside," and that these weapons were "prepared for smuggling outside Syrian territory (their destination was not specified)."
She continued: "This operation comes within the framework of ongoing efforts to enhance security and stability within the country and in neighboring countries."
Syrian security forces periodically carry out operations to pursue remnants of the Assad regime, outlaws, and rioters who have refused to surrender their weapons to the new authorities.
On December 8, 2024, Syrian factions took control of Damascus and other cities, ending 61 years of Baath Party rule and 53 years of Assad family rule.
Following the fall of the Assad regime, the new Syrian authorities launched an initiative to settle the status of its members in the army and security services, provided they surrender their weapons and keep their hands free of blood.
Tens of thousands responded to the initiative, while some armed groups affiliated with the regime's remnants rejected it, leading to clashes with a number of them. Others were arrested in security campaigns across the country.
