Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, noted that Trump's new tariffs were a shock to Europe, while they represented confirmation of Russia's path toward economic sovereignty.
"If Trump's trade war was a shock for Europe, for Russia it is confirmation of the correctness of our path toward economic and technological supremacy. Boomerangs have a habit of coming back," Slutsky wrote on his Telegram channel.
The Russian MP added that the European Union is terrified by Trump's decision to impose "reciprocal" tariffs.
He continued: "European elites are predicting economic losses and a decline in national GDP levels. But no one is analyzing the reasons. The economies of European countries have been weakened by years of Atlantic solidarity and its direct result—the anti-Russian stance."
He explained that "the Germans, in particular, could feel more stable now if they had not abandoned cooperation with Russia and had not engaged in mass hysteria by imposing sanctions on our country."
Trump signed an order on Wednesday imposing "reciprocal" tariffs on imports, citing the need to protect American industry and reduce the massive trade deficit, which he claims threatens the country's national security.
