British physician and gastrointestinal surgeon Karan Rajan has warned of the serious health consequences that food poisoning can cause.
In an interview with HuffPost magazine, the doctor said, "Food poisoning can lead to autoimmune diseases and other unspecified health problems, so it's important to monitor your body closely after exposure to food poisoning."
He added: "When harmful bacteria such as Salmonella or E. coli enter the body through food, they not only cause abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, but also destroy the good bacteria in the intestines that regulate immunity. Some bacteria present in small quantities in the intestines, such as Staphylococcus aureus, can take advantage of the body's weakened state and begin to multiply actively."
According to the doctor, the introduction of certain harmful bacteria into the body, which cause food poisoning, disrupts intestinal bacteria and triggers new inflammation, infections, and immune responses. Sometimes, this leads to a complete restructuring of the immune system—in this case, the immune system begins attacking intestinal cells and nerves.
The doctor pointed out that food poisoning can present with various symptoms, such as abdominal and intestinal pain, severe diarrhea or constipation, abdominal bloating, and intestinal and stomach cramps. Therefore, a doctor should be consulted if such symptoms appear.
Food poisoning is a common illness that typically results from eating food contaminated with infectious microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi. It can also be caused by the presence of toxic substances in food. Food poisoning is often not serious and its symptoms subside within about a week. However, sometimes food poisoning can be severe and require hospitalization.
