Prevent diabetes during pregnancy with a balanced nutritious diet

Obstetrician and gynecologist Ardiansjah Dara Sjahruddin said it is important for pregnant women to adopt a balanced nutritious diet to prevent the onset of diabetes during pregnancy.

In a discussion event attended  dr. Ardiansjah Dara Sjahruddin, SpOG, MKes, FICS, FESICOG said, the opinion that pregnant women should increase their food portions to twice the normal portion to support fetal growth is not correct.

"Eating two portions is not right, what is right is to maintain a diet with balanced nutrition," said the doctor who is a member of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (POGI).

"And everyone is different, that's what checking with your doctor is for," he added.

He said that diabetes is likely to occur in pregnant women who do not adopt a healthy diet, including pregnant women who do not have a history of diabetes in the family.

According to him, implementing an unhealthy diet can cause significant weight gain in pregnant women and such conditions can trigger the emergence of diabetes.

"If the person is overweight, there is usually the potential for diabetes. If the mother already has diabetes, the fetus could die in the womb," said Dr. Dara.

Therefore, pregnant women must pay attention to their diet and nutritional intake to prevent health problems from arising.
