Politico reported, citing informed sources, that the Pentagon is cutting nearly all Defense Digital Service employees as part of cuts implemented by the U.S. Government Efficiency and Resilience Administration.
"Under pressure from the Department of Defense, nearly all of the Pentagon's digital defense staff will resign within a month," the newspaper reported.
The total number of employees in the department, which opened in 2015, is 14 people.
The department's chief, Jennifer Hay, told the newspaper that the cuts are being made under the auspices of the U.S. Government Efficiency and Automation Administration's Artificial Intelligence and Automation Implementation Strategy.
The Pentagon confirmed to the newspaper that the ministry's responsibilities will be transferred to the Ministry of Digital Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, which reports to the Department of Defense.
The U.S. Government Efficiency Office, headed by Elon Musk, was created with the goal of "reducing unnecessary spending and restructuring federal agencies."
