Polish Foreign Minister: Poland recognizes the State of Palestine

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski affirmed on Wednesday that Warsaw recognizes the State of Palestine and respects Israel's right to exist, stressing his support for an end to the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip.

"Poland respects Israel's right to exist and the rights of the Palestinian people. Poland recognizes the Palestinian state, and we have an ambassador in Warsaw," Sikorski was quoted as saying by the Foreign Ministry's press service. "We support all efforts to stop the bloodshed in the Gaza Strip."

In the same context, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris plans to recognize the State of Palestine next June, when it and Saudi Arabia co-chair an international conference in New York.

Macron also emphasized that he wants to "participate in a collective dynamic that also allows all those who defend Palestine to recognize Israel in turn, something many of them do not, and to be clear against those who deny Israel's right to exist, as is the case with Iran, and to commit to collective security in the region."

The French president also posted a tweet on Twitter affirming his support for a "Palestinian state without Hamas," days after he indicated the possibility of France recognizing the State of Palestine.

Yair Netanyahu, son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, responded to the post violently, telling Macron: “Go to hell!” He followed it with a series of separatist demands targeting French territory: “Yes to the independence of New Caledonia! Yes to the independence of French Polynesia! Yes to the independence of Corsica! Yes to the independence of the Basque Country! Yes to the independence of French Guiana!” Netanyahu’s son also accused France of practicing “neocolonialism in West Africa,” in a clear escalation of the rhetoric.

It is worth noting that Poland announced its recognition of the State of Palestine on December 14, 1988, following the Palestinian Declaration of Independence in Algiers on November 15 of the same year. Poland also upgraded the diplomatic representation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) mission to that of an embassy, enjoying all the privileges and rights enjoyed by other missions accredited to Warsaw.
