Parents need to understand digital risks before limiting children's social media.

Educator and founder of the Keluarga Kita community Najelaa Shihab said parents must understand the various risks in the digital world, especially social media, before they can set boundaries in their children's digital space.

"If we talk about content, of course parents are worried. He has little contact with his family, but there is a lot of contact with unclear and unknown people in cyberspace. It's not necessarily the person as described. But that contact is also actually related to how the child becomes part of something, content, values, and so on that are in conflict with the values that are being tried to be found in the family," said Najelaa in a Smart Digital press conference with Meta in Jakarta, Wednesday.

She said another risk that parents need to understand is the consumerist nature of children because they follow trends circulating on social media. This, said Najelaa, is a challenge for parents because children cannot yet understand the meaning of consumerism which results in children following suit and buying unnecessary items.
