On Monday, Harvard University President Alan Garber announced in a statement that he had filed a lawsuit against the federal government over the freeze on federal funding to Harvard University and several other universities in response to protests in solidarity with Palestinians on campus and to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

In April 2024, pro-Palestine protests erupted at Columbia University in the United States and spread to more than 50 universities across the country. Police detained more than 3,100 people, most of them students and faculty members.
