Libyan security forces arrest 570 irregular migrants and human smugglers

Libyan security forces arrested 570 irregular migrants of various nationalities and several suspected human traffickers on Saturday in a security campaign to combat smuggling and migration in the Amsaid area on the eastern border.

According to a statement from the Criminal Investigation Department in eastern Libya, "After extensive investigations launched by security forces, a number of locations in the Amsaid area were identified as dens for storing illegal immigrants and for torturing and mistreating them."

The statement explained that "approximately 570 illegal immigrants of various nationalities were arrested, in addition to a number of smugglers operating these dens."

The statement stressed the "need to strike at the dens of corruption and eliminate all forms of smuggling, including illegal immigration, drugs, and contraband, in the Amsaid and Bir al-Ashhab areas."

Legal and health measures were subsequently taken against the irregular migrants, who were deported according to established procedures, and the arrested human traffickers were referred to the Public Prosecution.
