Hamas warns of a "dangerous religious escalation" at Al-Aqsa as Passover approaches

This came in a statement issued by the movement, which considered these calls to be "a continuation of the Israeli occupation's approach to targeting and Judaizing Islamic holy sites," warning of "the serious repercussions of these extremist practices" by settlers.

The movement affirmed that these calls "will not change the identity of Al-Aqsa Mosque, nor will they confer legitimacy or rights on the Israeli occupation there," emphasizing that the mosque will remain purely Islamic.

She added: "We call on the masses of our Arab and Islamic nation to defend Al-Aqsa and support it by all possible means. This is the duty of the time, especially during this sensitive phase in which the occupation is escalating its dangerous Judaization plans."

The movement also called on the Palestinian people in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and the occupied territories to "mobilize, mobilize, and maintain a large presence inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to thwart the settlers' plans and prevent the bringing of offerings or the performance of Talmudic rituals inside it."

The warning coincides with the approach of the Jewish Passover holiday, which runs from April 12 to 20. Calls by settler groups to revive the ritual of offering sacrifices inside Al-Aqsa Mosque have escalated, claiming it is the site of the alleged "Temple."

On Wednesday, extremist Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stormed Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, accompanied by more than 24 settlers, under heavy security guard, without prior announcement of the visit.

An official at the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf Department, who declined to be identified, told Anadolu Agency that the raid was part of Israeli attempts to impose a new reality on Al-Aqsa Mosque ahead of Easter.

Israeli authorities have continued to impose severe restrictions on Palestinian access to East Jerusalem from the West Bank since the outbreak of the war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. This comes amid what Palestinians view as systematic attempts to Judaize the city and erase its Arab and Islamic identity, including control of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
