Former Persebaya Surabaya coach who is now the architect of Madura United, Alfredo Vera, recalled the moment when he led the team nicknamed Bajol Ijo to promotion to the League 1 competition in the 2017 season, when he saw the League 2 champion trophy displayed at the Persebaya office.
"I remember a beautiful moment. We were able to help a big team move up to League 1. That was my job, teamwork. Sometimes we get gifts like that and I always want work that produces results," said Alfredo Vera after a press conference for the Persebaya vs Madura United match, at the Persebaya Surabaya office, Saturday.
According to the Argentine coach, the struggle to bring a team as big as Persebaya back to the highest caste was not easy and he was proud to be able to bring happiness to the people of Surabaya at that time.
There were many moments that he thought were very beautiful, such as when he was crowned champion and promoted to League 1, then welcomed by Bonek-Bonita at Juanda airport, which was followed by a parade with supporters and showing the League 2 champion trophy.
"There are many memories, but I don't want to think too much about it now, because it's over. But I'm quite happy because the people of Surabaya are happy, and that makes me happy too," he said.
When asked about the possibility of returning to coach Persebaya, the 52-year-old coach did not close the door and emphasized that he was always open if there was a suitable and professional offer.
In addition, Alfredo Vera's arrival at the Gelora Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT) to accompany Madura United against Persebaya in the continuation of Liga 1 also brought up special memories.
"When I come to GBT, I definitely remember when Persebaya won. But that's over. Now I have to focus on Madura. But it's always nice to be back at GBT with Persebaya supporters," he said.
