A Turkish doctor who worked at the Baptist Hospital describes the destruction caused by the occupation to Gaza hospitals

"Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is at the forefront of those destroyed," Oygun said.

The Turkish doctor explained that he had wanted to travel to the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli aggression on October 7, 2023, and that after an eight-month wait, he was able to enter the Strip through the European Medical Association and under the auspices of the World Health Organization.

destruction of hospitals

"The destruction in Gaza is massive. There are almost no living animals left. You can't see a house, place, or car that hasn't been destroyed," he said, noting that "the city's hospitals are shattered, and we were deeply affected by what we saw."

"After the hospitals were destroyed, there are only two CT scanners left in the Gaza Strip, one in Al-Nasser Hospital (south), and the other in Al-Ma'amoudiya Hospital (north)," Oygun added.

He added, "Despite the small size of the Baptist Hospital, it is used as an emergency center, as is Al-Nasser Hospital (south)."

"Even during ceasefires, Israeli drones were flying overhead, killing three to five people a day," Oygun said, noting that "one night, 412 people were killed, and then the number rose to 500... The situation is deplorable and is getting worse, and hospitals are being deliberately and systematically targeted."

On Sunday morning, Israeli warplanes bombed the Baptist Hospital south of Gaza City, destroying one of its buildings and damaging and setting fire to several of its departments, forcing it out of service.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has destroyed 34 of 38 hospitals, including both government and private hospitals, leaving only four hospitals operating at limited capacity despite their damage, amid a severe shortage of medicines and medical equipment, according to the latest statistics from the Government Media Office in Gaza.

Israeli airstrikes also completely put 80 health centers out of service, in addition to destroying 162 other medical facilities.

scarcity of basic supplies

"The prolonged ban on food and aid entering Gaza has negatively impacted the health of Palestinians in the Strip," Uygun asserted, explaining, "Our friends would show us photos of people before and after the war, and the difference in weight was 20 to 30 kilograms. There is no food and hunger is widespread."

Since March 2, the Israeli occupation army has been preventing the entry of essential supplies, including food and water, into the Gaza Strip after closing the crossings, causing a humanitarian disaster and worsening famine.

The Turkish doctor also praised the patience of Gaza's women, saying they "have great patience and dignity, and do not accept outside aid easily."
