A prominent Russian general was killed in a car bombing east of Moscow, with possible accusations pointing to Kyiv.

Russian authorities have not yet identified a potential party behind the bombing, but Kyiv has previously been accused of carrying out attacks targeting Russian military officials since the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022 .

The committee said in a statement that the victim was General Iaroslav Moskalyk, Deputy Chief of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

It reported that the explosion occurred in the town of Balashikha, several kilometers east of the Russian capital.

Unverified images posted on social media showed a car on fire while parked near residential buildings.

CCTV footage published by the Russian media outlet Izvestia also showed a large explosion in a car, with shrapnel flying as a person approached the vehicle.

Since 2022, Kyiv has been accused of carrying out attacks against Russian figures and military officials, both inside Russia and in Moscow-occupied areas of Ukraine.

In August 2022, a car explosion killed Daria Dugina, the daughter of pro-Kremlin extremist nationalist thinker Alexander Dugin.

In December 2024, Igor Kirillov, commander of Russia's Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defense Forces, was killed when an electric scooter parked near the building where he was staying in Moscow exploded, in an assassination for which the Ukrainian Security Service claimed responsibility.
