Perplexity AI bids to rebuild TikTok in America

Jakarta - Search engine maker Perplexity AI has made a bid to "rebuild TikTok in America" after filing to take over operations of the social media platform in the United States earlier this year.

According to Engadget's broadcast on Saturday (22/3), in a post on the company's blog, Perplexity AI conveyed an offer to rebuild TikTok in the United States, which could include efforts to rebuild the algorithm, add Community Notes features, and integrate short-form videos into its search engine.

However, Perplexity AI faces a lot of competition to take over TikTok, which would not be allowed to operate in the United States unless its Chinese parent company ByteDance sells it to a US entity.

The Financial Times reported that US investors in ByteDance are considering a deal with Oracle to assuage US President Donald Trump's concerns.

However, Perplexity AI believes that they are the best suited to manage TikTok.

"Perplexity is in a unique position to rebuild TikTok's algorithm without creating a monopoly. With world-class technical capabilities and the independence of a small technology company, we can prevent the dominance of big players in the short-form video and information search ecosystem," the company said.

Perplexity AI has announced their intention to rebuild TikTok’s recommendation algorithm from the ground up and open-source the For You feed.
