Microsoft announces it will shut down Skype on May 5, 2025

Jakarta - Microsoft announced that it will close its messaging and calling platform Skype on May 5, 2025 after 23 years of operation.

"We know this is a big change for Skype users, and we are incredibly grateful for their support and all the lessons that have helped Teams evolve over the past seven years," said Microsoft 365 Collaborative Apps and Platforms President Jeff Teper as quoted by Tech Crunch, Saturday.

Microsoft is transitioning Skype users to the free version of Microsoft Teams. Skype users will have 10 weeks to decide what to do next with their accounts. During the transition period, Skype users can download the Teams app and sign in with their Skype credentials, where all chats and contacts will be automatically migrated. The Skype app will continue to function until May 5, 2025.
