Jakarta - The Directorate General of Capture Fisheries at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is encouraging the modernization of Indonesian fishing vessels from wooden to iron to meet standards.
Director General of Capture Fisheries of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Lotharia Latif, said that his party has gradually begun to encourage the modernization and transformation of fishing vessels from wooden to iron vessels so that they meet the provisions that have been set.
"This step is to meet the predetermined seaworthiness standards, namely seaworthiness, catchworthiness and storage worthiness of fish caught on the ship," said Latif in a statement in Jakarta, Thursday.
He said that 65 percent of fishing vessels in Indonesia are on average more than 10 years old, dominated by wooden vessels. However, Latif did not mention the number of fishing vessels currently registered with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
