Jakarta - Internal Medicine Specialist Consultant for Kidney and Hypertension and member of the Advisory Board of the Indonesian Nephrology Association (Pernefri) dr. Tunggul D. Situmorang, Sp.PD-KGH, FINASIM, dismissed rumors that chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are prohibited from consuming fruits.
"Patients with PGK are prohibited from consuming certain types of fruits. Who agrees with this? That's a myth," said Tunggul in a press conference held in Jakarta, Thursday.
Chronic kidney disease patients are still allowed to consume fruits, however, by choosing fruits that are low in potassium and not consuming excessive amounts. The low-potassium fruits that he recommends are apples, blueberries, raspberries, grapes, peaches, pineapples, pears and cranberries.
Meanwhile, fruits high in potassium include bananas, coconuts, dates, starfruit, avocados, kiwi and guava.
