Tehran - Iran will soon respond to a letter from US President Donald Trump on the nuclear issue sent two weeks ago, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Thursday.
Previously on Wednesday (19/3), Axios, after citing a number of sources, reported that Trump's letter to Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, included a two-month deadline for reaching a new nuclear deal.
"He (Trump) has sent a letter, and the letter will be answered and delivered in the proper manner... The answer will be given in the coming days," Araghchi said while addressing people celebrating the new year 1404 in the Iranian calendar.
According to Araghchi, Trump's letter was more "threatening" but also mentioned "opportunities."
He reiterated that Tehran would not engage in direct negotiations with Washington as long as there were additional pressures, threats and sanctions.
On March 7, Trump confirmed that he had sent a letter to Khamenei with an offer to start negotiations on a nuclear deal.
Trump added that he would rather reach a deal with Tehran than use military force.
Iran signed a nuclear deal with China, France, Russia, Britain, the United States and Germany in 2015, which required Iran to scale back its nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions.
However, the US withdrew from the deal in 2018 during Trump's first term and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, causing the agreement to collapse.
In response, Iran has gradually reduced its commitments under the deal, including lifting restrictions on nuclear research and uranium enrichment levels.
