AI startup DeepSeek is now under tight scrutiny by the Chinese government

Jakarta - After startup DeepSeek suddenly gained popularity in January with the launch of its open artificial intelligence reasoning model, R1, the company is now operating under tight surveillance by the Chinese government.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Saturday, according to The Information, several DeepSeek employees are prohibited from traveling abroad freely, and the Chinese government is now playing an active role in screening potential investors.

DeepSeek enforced these travel restrictions by withholding the passports of certain employees through its parent company, High-Flyer, a quantitative hedge fund firm.
