US to take over Gaza Strip, Trump says

Washington - United States President Donald Trump said the US plans to take over the Gaza Strip, Palestine.

"The United States is going to take over the Gaza Strip and we're going to do something there," Trump said at a joint press conference with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday.

Trump said the US would take control of Gaza and "disarm all dangerous live bombs and other weapons, level the area, and clear the destroyed buildings".

The US will also develop Gaza's economy, which will "provide unlimited jobs and housing for the people," he said.

Earlier, while meeting with Netanyahu in the Oval Office of the White House, Trump said he thought Jordan and Egypt would accept the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza.

The Palestinian enclave that was destroyed by Israeli aggression was described as a demolition site and no longer habitable.

"I know they've talked to you about this, and they've said they're not going to accept (Gaza residents)," the US president said.

"I said they would accept it, but I think other countries would accept it too," he added.

According to Trump, the Gazans who have "suffered so much" and are "so disadvantaged" do not want to live there any longer.

"They're living in hell," Trump said.

He added that the only reason they wanted to return to Gaza was because they had no choice.

"If they had a choice, they would choose not to go back to Gaza and live somewhere else that is beautiful and safer," Trump said.

On January 25, Trump proposed that Gazans be relocated to Egypt and Jordan, a proposal that was roundly rejected by both of Palestine's neighbors.

Hamas, the Palestinian resistance group that rules Gaza, also condemned the proposal, calling it "US complicity in crimes" committed by Israel.
