UK warns US that steel import tariffs will hurt both countries

London - The British government has warned that the United States government's planned steel import tariffs will harm both countries.

The UK is currently seeking an exemption from President Donald Trump's planned trade policies.

UK Business Minister Jonathan Reynolds told the BBC on Sunday (16/2) that the UK and US had a "common interest" in avoiding a 25 percent import tax scheduled to come into effect from March.

Reynolds stressed that the British steel industry offers very specific products that the US needs, such as the coating for naval submarines produced in Sheffield, England.

"Imposing tariffs on British steel would be negative for us, as well as for the US," Reynolds said, warning that the move could increase costs for American taxpayers.
