Yogyakarta - Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Gadjah Mada Dr. Ir. Jayan Sentanuhady is optimistic that with the right strategy, Indonesia has the opportunity to realize a national car.
Jayan in his statement in Yogyakarta, Friday, said the main key to the success of the national car is research and development so that the products produced are truly relevant to the market.
"Generally, people choose compact vehicles or those that can accommodate many passengers. If the design and features offered are in accordance with consumer expectations, national cars can compete," he said.
According to him, the development of the global automotive industry that is moving towards electrification is an opportunity for Indonesia to present a national car based on environmentally friendly energy.
"Several manufacturers are now focusing on environmentally friendly engines, so if national cars can provide this option, it would certainly be much better," he said.
However, Jayan emphasized the importance of building public love for local products.
He cited Vietnam's success with Vinfast as proof that developing countries can also have their own car brands.
The public, he said, would be proud if the national car was owned by an Indonesian and other aspects could be improved simultaneously.
"There may be some challenges, but Vietnam has proven it with their own national car, Vinfast. We will also be able to do it with the capabilities we have," he said.
In order for the project to be successful, the government is expected to play an active role in providing supportive regulations, attractive incentives, and cooperation with various parties so that the development of the national car runs smoothly.
