Trump: Greenland needs to be controlled for US national security

ANKARA - US President Donald Trump on Wednesday reiterated his desire for the US to take control of Greenland for national security reasons.

"We need Greenland so badly for our national security and international security, we have to do something with Greenland," he told reporters aboard Air Force One, as reported by Forbes.

Asked if the issue had been discussed with European officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said no.

"We have to have Greenland for national security reasons, especially now, versus 20, 30 years ago when they were talking about that," Trump said.

"You know, they've been talking about it for a long time. Years ago they were talking about Greenland. But now with modern weapons, planes, and the speed of planes, and all the things, we have to have Greenland," he said.

Greenland, which has been under Danish sovereignty since 1953, has attracted Trump's interest because of its strategic location and potential mineral resources.
