Minister of Social Affairs: People's schools have dormitories and can accommodate hundreds of students

Jakarta - Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf conveyed the concept of a people's school with a dormitory which is estimated to be able to accommodate up to hundreds of students.

"This is a boarding school, a leading school for poor or extremely poor families, or more precisely perhaps those with low incomes. For capacity, we are discussing it, we are calculating all of this, it could be 100, 200, or 300, depending on the results of our discussion," he said when met after the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Sarasehan event in Jakarta, Tuesday.

He explained that on average, poor and extremely poor people do not have the opportunity to continue their secondary education.

"Yes, this (people's school) is only for those who come from poor and extremely poor families, from those families later, because if we look at it, on average they cannot continue their education to junior high school level. So if the mother or father is an elementary school graduate, the child will not graduate from junior high school either," he said.
