DeepSeek's AI breakthrough gets wide recognition from US tech industry

Sacramento - Chinese AI company DeepSeek has received positive feedback from leading US tech companies with its latest breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) models.DeepSeek's R1 reasoning model, released last month, has been widely compared to OpenAI's most advanced model, o1. However, the R1 model was built at a fraction of the cost of computing power spent by major US AI labs.DeepSeek's breakthrough in efficiency has been widely praised by the US tech industry, including AI companies and tech giants.Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged DeepSeek's "original innovation" and said his company has integrated the R1 model into Microsoft's developer platforms, Azure and GitHub. Nadella stressed the importance of taking China's developments seriously, while noting the incredible efficiency of DeepSeek's open-source model.Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also highlighted the benefits of DeepSeek's published innovations."DeepSeek has some pretty new infrastructure optimization advances that, fortunately, they've made public. We can not only observe what they're doing, but we can also read it and apply it, so it's going to benefit us," Zuckerberg said at a recent company meeting.Despite initial market concerns about DeepSeek's release, Nvidia has praised the R1 model as "an incredible advance in AI." Nvidia has described the company's approach as a prime example of scaling test time, one of three primary scaling methods currently shaping AI development.Google CEO Sundar Pichai has also been complimentary, acknowledging DeepSeek's "really, really good work" and saying the lowering cost of AI is benefiting Google and the broader AI industry.Like Microsoft, Amazon has embraced the new technology by allowing developers to leverage the R1 model through Amazon Web Services, describing it as "powerful and cost-effective."DeepSeek's breakthroughs have also impressed companies in the U.S., including OpenAI and Perplexity.OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described DeepSeek’s R1 model as “impressive,” especially in its performance relative to cost. In response to the new competition, Altman announced OpenAI would accelerate the rollout of better models.Former OpenAI executive Zack Kass reinforced the positive sentiment, calling the R1 model a breakthrough. “Feeling excited about progress in science is something we should all want, and seeing the cost of critical resources go down is something we should all want,” Kass told Yahoo Finance.Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas also praised DeepSeek’s AI model, noting that the company is not simply copying existing technology but innovating in significant ways.DeepSeek’s ability to create an efficient solution marks a significant milestone in the development of AI, Srinivas said.

"Because DeepSeek had to figure out how to work around the limitations, it actually created something more efficient. They found a lot of clever solutions.
