New Delhi - The death toll in a stampede on Saturday (15/2) at a New Delhi railway station has risen to 18, a government official confirmed on Sunday (16/2).
Of the dead, 10 were women, four children and four men.In addition, dozens of people were injured in the tragedy that occurred on Saturday night local time.The victims had gathered at the railway station to board a special train to Prayagraj district in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to perform a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, which is the confluence of three rivers, namely the Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati during the ongoing Maha Kumbh spiritual festival.According to an Indian Railways official, when the tragedy occurred there was a large crowd that exceeded the capacity of the railway station. There was confusion about the arrival of the special train at one of the platforms, even people ran to other platforms and collided with each other.In the past month, people from all over India have visited Prayagraj to perform the holy dip in Prayagraj.
