France says it will not send troops to Greenland

Paris - France on Thursday (30) confirmed it would not send military troops to Greenland, the world's largest island which is an autonomous Danish territory with its own government and independent parliament.

In the Foreign Ministry's weekly press conference, spokesman Christophe Lemoine stressed that the principles of the inviolability of borders and sovereignty remain valid in Europe.

He added that French President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot had conveyed the principles to their Danish counterparts during a visit to Paris earlier this week.

"Sending troops is not in the discussion," Lemoine said. "The only thing that needs to be emphasized is the obligation to respect borders and national sovereignty."

The French statement came amid US President Donald Trump's clear stance on his desire to take the region under his country's control.
