BMKG: 6.2 magnitude earthquake in South Aceh has no tsunami potential

Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the 6.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Indian Ocean west of South Aceh Regency, Aceh Province did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Director Daryono in Jakarta, Friday, said that the certainty was obtained based on the results of earthquake source modeling carried out by the BMKG expert team.

BMKG detected the epicenter of the tectonic earthquake located in the sea at a depth of 59 kilometers with coordinates 3.15° North Latitude (LU); 96.95° East Longitude (BT), or 28 kilometers southwest of Tapaktuan City, South Aceh.

The earthquake with the latest parameters of 5.2 magnitude was triggered by rock deformation in the Indo-Australian Plate which was subducting under Sumatra Island.

Based on the results of the analysis carried out by BMKG, it is known that the mechanism of the movement of the plate rocks is oblique normal or horizontal and downward movement.

"This modeling shows that the earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami," he said.

The earthquake was detected shaking a number of areas at 18.03 WIB in South Aceh Regency, Simelue Regency, Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, Gayo Lues, East Aceh, Banda Aceh City with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI (vibrations felt by many people in their homes).

Even to Medan City, North Sumatra with an intensity scale of II MMI (vibrations felt by several people, light hanging objects swayed).

"Three aftershocks were recorded until 18.35 WIB with the largest magnitude being 3.8," he said.

BMKG appeals to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues whose truth is in doubt until the results of a comprehensive event analysis are reported by BMKG.

The results of this analysis are usually obtained by the public by accessing the infoBMKG online application, infoBMKG social media, or by directly contacting the nearest BMKG office.

In addition, he said, the community is also expected to always follow and comply with disaster impact mitigation guidelines from the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in Aceh.
