Sudan : Rapid Support Forces attack on Sennar leaves 31 dead and dozens injured

At least 31 people were killed and 100 injured after Rapid Support Forces renewed their attack on the southeastern Sudanese city of Sennar on Sunday, a rights group said.

Emergency Lawyers, a group that monitors civilian killings and other human rights abuses, said the RSF had targeted several areas of the city with artillery, including the main market.

The advance of the Rapid Support Forces, which already control most of Sennar state, has slowed in the southeast of the country as heavy rains have made movement difficult.

The Emergency Lawyers group said the army killed at least four people in air strikes on the town of al-Suki, near Sennar. The Rapid Support Forces also killed one person and wounded 17 in artillery strikes on the town of al-Obeid, another area they are trying to retake.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left about 18,800 dead and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

There are growing international and UN calls to end the war in order to spare Sudan a humanitarian catastrophe that has begun to push millions to famine and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting that has spread to 13 of the 18 states.
