Pros and Cons of Sleeping on a Firm Mattress

Dr. Nikolai Patsilenko, a traumatologist and orthopedist, said that sleeping on a hard mattress has its pros and cons, so each person's condition should be taken into account individually.

According to him, infants, children and adolescents are recommended to sleep on firm mattresses in order to form a correct spine. People who are overweight, have osteochondrosis, scoliosis, arthritis or have problems with body alignment are also recommended to sleep on a firm mattress.

“A firm mattress can help people who are overweight or have arthritis take the pressure off their joints,” he says.

The doctor recommends that anyone suffering from back pain sleep on a firm mattress, as it provides a more flat surface, which helps maintain a correct position for the spine during sleep. A firm mattress is also beneficial for people suffering from osteochondrosis, as it helps maintain a straight spine and reduces the load on the intervertebral discs.

However, according to him, a hard mattress can cause discomfort and even back or joint pain for some people, especially if they suffer from certain medical problems. For example, people who sleep on one side will feel uncomfortable because a hard mattress will not provide them with enough cushioning, which may lead to increased load on the shoulders and hips. In addition, it is not unlikely that it can cause blood circulation problems. If the mattress is too hard, it may cause numbness in the extremities, which is especially important for diabetics, so they should avoid sleeping on a hard mattress.
