Outgoing Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune won a new presidential term on Sunday evening in early elections held yesterday, Saturday, with a huge margin of votes over his competitors.
The head of the Independent Election Authority, Mohamed Charfi, said during a press conference that President Tebboune won the majority of voters’ votes, with 94.65%, while candidate Abdelali Hassani Cherif, head of the Movement for a Peaceful Society (the largest Islamic party), came in second with 3.17% of the votes.
As for the candidate Youssef Ouchich, the first national secretary of the Socialist Forces Front (the oldest opposition/leftist party), he came in third and last place with 2.16% of the votes.
Sharafi stated that the votes cast for the three candidates amounted to 5 million, 630 thousand, and 196 votes out of more than 24 million voters on the electoral list.
This is the second presidential election to be held under the full supervision of an independent electoral authority after the 2019 elections, after they were previously held under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior and with less powers for the Independent High Authority for Election Monitoring.
Kudos!
