An international team of scientists reported that continued rise in temperatures on Earth will lead to major climate changes.
The researchers studied four fundamental natural systems of Earth’s climate—the Atlantic currents, the Amazon rainforests, and the ice caps of the North and South Poles—and found that if any of these systems were disrupted due to rising global temperatures, it would trigger a domino effect and be a critical turning point in Earth’s climate evolution, according to Nature Communications.
The scientific team's report stated: "It has been shown that if current climate trends continue into the current century, the risk of a decisive shift is equal to 45 percent. This risk will increase with every 0.1°C increase in temperature and beyond the 1.5°C threshold."
According to the researchers, to prevent the “tipping point” from occurring, greenhouse gas emissions must fall to zero by 2100. These results confirm that reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the current decade is essential and important for global security.
