The press office of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute announced that Russian scientists have recorded a new record temperature at the Vostok station, in the middle of Antarctica.
The office notes that the temperature recorded by scientists was 34.2 degrees below zero Celsius. This is the highest temperature in winter during the monitoring history.
The office's statement said: "Scientists of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute recorded the highest winter temperature in the history of monitoring temperatures in the coldest region on Earth, as it rose at the Russian Vostok station, in the middle of Antarctica, on August 6, 2024 to 34.2 degrees Celsius below zero."
The office notes that the temperature the next day dropped to 48.8 degrees Celsius below zero.
It is noteworthy that July and August in central Antarctica are the coldest months of the year, as the temperature drops to 66.6 degrees Celsius in July and to 67.6 degrees Celsius below zero in August.
It is noteworthy that the Russian Vostok station is the only station that operates all year round in the middle of Antarctica. On July 21, 1983, scientists recorded the lowest temperature in its history - 89.2 degrees Celsius below zero.
