"Corrosion-resistant and low-cost" Invention of an alloy of 5 metals for aircraft and cars

Scientists of the South Ural State University in Russia, together with foreign colleagues, have created a new alloy of 5 metals for aircraft and machine building.

According to Majed Nasri, senior researcher at the university’s High Entropy Materials Laboratory, this alloy consists of five metals: iron, nickel, chromium, niobium, and manganese. This new alloy allows for the manufacture of equipment that is more resistant to external influences compared to the alloys currently used without increasing their cost.

Majid Nasri points out that a team of university scientists, in cooperation with colleagues from Iran, Britain, China and the United Arab Emirates, invented the new alloy and proved its high resistance to corrosion. According to the scientists, this is the first alloy of this type and is considered ideal in terms of price, hardness and corrosion resistance.

He added, explaining that the task of creating such an alloy was difficult because it required successfully combining its components while maintaining their properties. The highest proportion in the alloy is iron and nickel. The proportion of chromium is 15 percent, which ensures its resistance to rust, and 10 percent manganese and small proportions of the rest of the components.

The study was published in the international journal Colloids and Surfaces A.
