WHO: COVID-19 still kills 1,700 people a week worldwide

The World Health Organization said that "Covid-19" continues to kill about 1,700 people a week around the world, calling on people most at risk of infection to "continue to receive vaccination against the virus."

In a press conference yesterday, Thursday, the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned of the "danger of declining protection through vaccines."

He explained that "despite the continued recording of deaths, the data shows that protection through vaccines has declined among health workers and people over the age of 60, who are among the groups most at risk of infection."

"The World Health Organization recommends that people in high-risk groups receive the COVID-19 vaccine within 12 months of their last dose," he added.

The World Health Organization has reported more than "seven million deaths from the coronavirus, although the true toll of the pandemic is believed to be much higher."

The virus has dismantled economies and crippled health systems.

Tedros declared the end of "Covid-19" as a global health emergency in May 2023, more than three years after the virus was first detected in the Wuhan region of China in late 2019.

The World Health Organization urged governments to "continue to monitor and sequence viruses, and ensure access to reliable and affordable tests, treatments and vaccines."
