US Secret Service Boosts Trump Protection

The head of the US Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, said that the US security agency has increased protection measures for former US President Donald Trump after the assassination attempt on him on Saturday.

Cheatle noted that the Secret Service has reviewed security procedures at the Republican convention in Milwaukee.

“I have confidence in the security plan put in place by the Secret Service convention coordinator and our partners, which we have reviewed and enhanced since Saturday’s shooting,” Cheatle said in a statement posted on the Secret Service website. “In addition to the additional security enhancements we made to former President Trump’s security detail in June, we have also made changes to his security detail effective Saturday to ensure his continued protection at the convention and throughout the remainder of the campaign.”

Last Saturday, a rally of Trump supporters in Pennsylvania was hit by gunfire. Video footage shows Trump being helped by security guards and escorts from his arm, while his ear was bleeding.

Trump later said he had been shot in the ear and lost a lot of blood. The U.S. Secret Service said it had killed a suspect who fired multiple shots at the podium. One spectator, a 50-year-old former firefighter, was killed in the shooting, and two others were seriously wounded.

The FBI identified the Trump shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed at the scene by Secret Service agents.
