Internet use has become an integral part of most people's daily lives, and many have become immersed in the virtual world provided by the World Wide Web. What is the impact of this on health?
“The use of the Internet has become a daily habit for many people. Many people turn to the virtual world in search of entertainment or consider it a way to escape from the surrounding reality, and this is caused by loneliness, stress or more serious conditions, such as depression or anxiety disorder. The virtual world provides an alternative reality, where a person can feel successful, socialize and be free from real constraints,” said Viktor Nordaev, a psychologist at SberZdorovye Medical Company.
“Regular presence in the virtual world can have a significant impact on the nervous system and cognitive functions, such as memory and attention. According to recent research, active interaction with virtual reality can improve visual-spatial skills, reaction time and attention, but excessive engagement in this type of activity can lead to deterioration of short-term memory, decreased ability to concentrate, and can turn into a type of addiction,” he added.
The doctor pointed out that the rational use of smart devices and content on social networks is one of the most important elements of modern psychological prevention. Adults are advised not to spend more than two hours a day on the Internet, while children under the age of two are advised not to be exposed to the danger of mobile or smart device screens. As for school-age children and adolescents, it is recommended that they not use the Internet for more than one hour a day.
Nordayev stressed the importance of practicing physical activities on a daily basis and the importance of communication in real life, to maintain memory and intellectual abilities and develop social skills. The doctor advised anyone who notices that he has an addiction to the Internet to stay away from this habit as much as possible, and to set limits for himself on the time he spends daily in front of the screen. He noted the need to resort to a specialist doctor to obtain help in such cases.
