Thai police rescue 12 Moroccan citizens who were trafficked to Myawadi : Myanmar

The Nation reports that 12 Moroccan nationals who were trafficked to Myawady to work in Myanmar were taken to the Turk district of Thailand by the Thai police on July 5 through the border gate.

After the Moroccan Embassy contacted Thai Move Forward Party MP Rangsiman Rome in May to rescue 21 of its citizens trapped in Myanmar, the Royal Thai Army and the Moroccan Embassy began an operation to rescue these people, he said.

He said that the Royal Thai Army consulted with local NGOs and humanitarian aid groups about the situation of trafficked Moroccan citizens and negotiated with the owner of the casino. Upon questioning those who were released, 21 of them said that they had been cheated and trafficked by a telephone call center gang in Morocco. Of the remaining nine, seven were freed because their parents paid the gang, and two are still working, he said.

Meanwhile, a group of Filipinos who were trafficked to Myanmar are trying to be allowed to leave Myanmar, a DFA official from the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines said.

It is said that these Filipino nationals were sent to Myanmar and forced to work in crypto industries after being tricked into working in Bangkok.
