The car's owners, Cynthia and Jeff Levine, said they heard a crash outside their home in Atlantic Highlands, about a mile from the nearest body of water, Raritan Bay.
"The car horns were blaring like crazy, like we'd never heard them before," Cynthia explained. "I didn't know how to turn them off. I went outside and found Jeff in the yard. He heard the crash too, but ignored it."
When they went to investigate, they found their Tesla's windshield broken and covered in fish scales and blood.
Fish smashes Tesla car window
The strange incident was documented by a security camera installed in the car, which showed a small fish suddenly falling from the sky and hitting the car.
At first they thought someone had thrown the fish, and Jeff wondered, "Is someone after us?"
But later we were able to identify the vandal, as Cynthia says: "We also have an eagle's nest in our backyard... We think that was probably the culprit."
Locals said it was common to see birds flying around with fish in their mouths. The Levins believe the eagles may have dropped their dinner.
A similar incident occurred in nearby Sayreville last year, when a bird of prey dropped a fish on a transformer, knocking out power for thousands of people.
