The Sierra Leonean justice system has been heavy-handed against 11 people found guilty of treason in particular, in the context of what the authorities have described as an attempted coup d'état in November 2023 against the Freetown regime.
The leader of the insurgency, Amadu Koita Makalo, was sentenced to 182 years in prison for treason. He was also found guilty of murder and shooting with intent to kill.
This former bodyguard of ex-president Ernest Bai Koroma was known for his criticism of the current Sierra Leonean president Julius Maada Bio.
The other 10 defendants were sentenced to terms ranging from 30 to 112 years.
Former President Bai Koroma, who was charged in January in connection with the case, was granted sick leave.
