Romania records 503 new measles cases in a week

Romania's National Institute of Public Health announced 503 new cases of measles in the country over the past week, and one person died from the disease.

A statement issued by the institute said: “Between January 1, 2023 and July 7, 2024, 20,538 measles cases were recorded in the country, with 21 deaths. During the past week, 503 new cases were recorded, with one death.”

Experts at the institute noted that a seven-month-old child died from the disease, and he had not received the vaccine, as children are vaccinated against the aforementioned disease from the age of nine months.

It is noteworthy that most of the measles cases were diagnosed in the Romanian provinces of Brasov and Mureș, as well as in the capital Bucharest, and infections with the disease were discovered in all provinces of Romania.

The Romanian Ministry of Health announced the spread of a measles epidemic in the country on December 5, and indicated that the reason for the spread of the pandemic was the low vaccination rates.

Measles is an acute viral disease that mainly affects children, and causes complications that can sometimes be serious. Its symptoms include fever, runny nose, dry cough, and eye inflammation. It also causes a rash that is often connected to each other. An infected person can transmit the virus to others for about eight days. The infection begins four days before the rash appears and ends four days after it appears.
