Nova Agency published an article confirming that Libya has surpassed Tunisia as the first country of departure for irregular migrants compared to last year.
17,659 migrants arrived from the Libyan coast to Europe as of July 16, 2024, while 11,001 migrants arrived from Tunisia, according to the agency.
According to the International Organization for Migration, 401 dead and 494 missing, for a total of 895 victims, were recorded among migrants from Tunisia and Libya.
It is noteworthy that the Libyan government is holding the "Mediterranean Migration" conference today, Wednesday, in the presence of representatives of the European Union Commission and a number of European and African countries concerned with the issue of illegal immigration.
The forum aims to discuss common challenges and develop practical solutions that contribute to reducing illegal immigration across the Mediterranean and enhancing cooperation between African and European countries to achieve greater stability in the region.
A group of leaders from the countries bordering the Mediterranean are participating in the conference, headed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, accompanied by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Pentedosi, according to Nova Agency.
This forum comes at a time when the Mediterranean region is witnessing a significant increase in the number of illegal immigrants, which requires concerted international efforts to confront this phenomenon.
