The Libyan government is holding a conference on “Mediterranean Migration” on July 17, with the attendance of representatives of the European Union Commission and a number of European and African countries concerned with the issue of illegal immigration.
The forum aims to discuss common challenges and develop practical solutions that contribute to reducing illegal immigration across the Mediterranean and enhancing cooperation between African and European countries to achieve greater stability in the region.
A group of leaders from the countries bordering the Mediterranean will participate in the conference, headed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who will arrive in Tripoli tomorrow, July 17, accompanied by Italian Interior Minister Matteo Pentedosi, according to Nova Agency.
Minister of State for Communication and Policy Affairs in the Government of National Unity Walid Al-Lafi said during a press conference with Interior Minister Imad Al-Tarabulsi that "the forum will be held for one day to come up with practical solutions to the immigration file."
Al-Lafi considered the forum to be a strategic vision in the immigration file in cooperation with European and African countries, according to him.
The forum will be attended by Italy, Malta, Niger, Chad, Spain, Greece, Czech Republic, Sudan, Algeria, Tunisia, and the Netherlands, in addition to the Arab League, the African Union, and the European Union.
Libya, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea, is a transit point for many irregular migrants to Europe , while thousands of them are languishing in Libyan prisons.
This forum comes at a time when the Mediterranean region is witnessing a significant increase in the number of illegal immigrants, which requires concerted international efforts to confront this phenomenon.
