Israeli media reports warned of what it called the rapid Iranian encroachment into East Africa and the impact it claimed would have on the Suez Canal in the future.
An Israeli news website, Nziv, reported that "if Iran expands in Eritrea in particular, the Suez Canal will disappear forever, Iran will have a major impact on the European economy, and it will be a severe blow to the United States and its followers in the region."
The Hebrew website report added that, according to the Iranians, “its presence in Eritrea will have a positive impact on maintaining maritime security, combating Western colonial piracy, and increasing cooperation between Yemen, Egypt, Iran, and the entire region.”
The site continued: "After renewing relations with Sudan and renewing the passage of arms convoys from Iran to Yemen and Gaza via Sudan, the spring of relations with Eritrea began, whose location opposite the western coast of Yemen is considered decisive for Iran."
The report pointed out that "Israel in the past made a great effort to keep Iran away from that region, and now Tel Aviv's big hands are 'drowning in the sea'. There is no Foreign Ministry in Israel, and its minister is preoccupied with the political war within his party and is not doing anything about it."
The Eritrean Foreign Minister said: "Asmara is ready to expand its relations with Tehran even at the strategic level."
