The Israeli Ministry of Health announced that a 25-year-old man from the center of the country had contracted encephalitis caused by a rare amoeba, and is now in intensive care in critical condition.
The ministry explained that the young man does not suffer from chronic diseases, and according to initial information, he was most likely infected with the amoeba (Naegleria Fowleri) at Jay Beach.
The Ministry of Health is conducting an investigation and today sent environmental health inspectors to test the water by taking samples.
She announced that she would inform the public whenever necessary.
About 400 cases have been reported worldwide, and it is a rare disease with a high mortality rate.
Amoebas are commonly found in fresh water, ponds, or stagnant water sources of various types.
