The International Court of Justice announced today, Monday, that Spain has filed a declaration of its intervention in the case related to the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel, regarding the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
The court said via its account on X that Spain, under Article 63 of the Court's Statute, has submitted to us a declaration of intervention in the case relating to the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.
On Friday, Spain announced that it had submitted an official request to join the “genocide” case against Israel regarding the genocide in the Strip, which has been witnessing a devastating war since October 7, 2023.
The Spanish Foreign Ministry indicated, in a statement, that it aims through this step to contribute to the return of peace to Gaza and the Middle East, end the war and strengthen the two-state solution, which, according to the statement, constitutes "the only guarantee for peaceful and secure coexistence for Palestinians and Israelis."
The Foreign Ministry indicated that other countries such as Colombia, Mexico and Palestine have currently intervened in this issue, and that countries such as Ireland, Belgium and Chile intend to intervene.
At the end of December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it had violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.
Later, several countries submitted requests to join the case, including Palestine, Turkey, Libya, Nicaragua, Colombia and Mexico.
